Time to Evict Him: How to Stop Thinking About Your Ex
Oct 25, 2026Hey, love. Let's talk about the man who still lives in your head rent-free. Maybe it ended last month, and it still stings every time your phone lights up. Maybe it's been ten years, you've rebuilt your whole life, and he still shows up out of nowhere: a song in the grocery store, his name on a mutual friend's post, a 2 AM replay of the last thing he said on his way out the door.
You're not crazy, and you're not "still hung up on him." That's just what a brain does with a big loss, and it can be retrained.
I gave him more attention after the divorce than during it
I know this one personally. When my marriage ended at 35, I was left with three little kids and a head full of him. I replayed what he said, what I should have said, and what he was doing now. Honestly, I think I gave that man more of my attention after the divorce than he ever gave me during it!
Then one day it hit me. Every hour I spent replaying the past was an hour he got to steal from my future. He had already taken enough. He did NOT get that too.
The Play: He doesn't get to win your future
Taking your power back doesn't mean pretending it didn't hurt. It means deciding where your energy goes from here. I don't know about you, but here's what worked for me:
- I stopped checking. No scrolling his page, no "just curious" questions to mutual friends. Every peek resets the clock, and I wanted the clock moving forward.
- I called out the replay. When the loop started, I'd tell myself, "He's not on the schedule today," and put that energy into something I was building.
- I wrote down the future. I wrote what I wanted my life, my kids' lives and my next relationship to look like. A woman with a plan has a lot less room for a ghost.
- I stopped waiting to feel 100% healed. Nobody mails you a certificate. The healing happens on the way to love, not before it.
What if it's been years?
Then this is for you too, love. Time alone doesn't evict anybody. Rebuilt lives still have a 2 AM. The moves are the same whether it ended in September or a decade ago. The only difference is how long he's been squatting.
He had his shot at your past. Your future is not up for rent.
If you want help taking your head back, I made The 5-Day Reset for exactly this. It's my free private podcast, one episode a day for five days, that you can listen to in the car, on a walk, or after the kids are in bed. By day five you'll have your head back and your eyes on what's next.
