Should You Ask ChatGPT If You Should Break Up With Him?

Hey, love. If you've ever pasted his texts into ChatGPT and asked "what did he mean by this?", you're in good company. My clients tell me they do it all the time. Some decode every message he sends. Some type out an entire fight and ask who was right. And more and more of them ask the big one: should I break up with him?

I get why. It's 11 PM, you don't want to bug your best friend again, and ChatGPT never gets tired of hearing about him. It answers in seconds and it never judges you. So let's talk about why it's still the wrong place to make this decision.

What ChatGPT can't see

A client of mine typed her whole relationship into ChatGPT. (I've changed the details to protect her privacy.) Two months in, he hadn't said "I love you" or introduced her to his kids, and he wanted to take things slow. ChatGPT told her he might be emotionally unavailable, and she came to our session ready to end it.

But when she walked me through it, a different man showed up. He called when he said he would. He planned the dates. She always knew where she stood. When I asked what he'd actually done wrong, she couldn't name one thing. He wasn't unavailable. He was serious, and serious men take it slower. She almost ended it with a good one because a chatbot read her fear and called it a red flag.

Why AI tends to agree with you

ChatGPT only hears your side, typed out when you're hurt or anxious. It never hears him, never sees his face, and never watches him show up on a random Tuesday. And it leans toward telling you what you want to hear. In 2025, OpenAI actually rolled back a ChatGPT update because it had become too agreeable. So when it agrees with you, that isn't proof you're right. It might just be doing what it does.

The real cost: you never build the skill

Knowing who's right for you is a skill. Every time you hand that decision to an app, you skip the practice, and the next man comes along and you're right back in the chat window. I use AI every day to run my business. I would never use it to run my love life.

What to do instead

I don't know about you, but here's what I'd do before typing one word into a chatbot:

  • Look at what he does, not what he texts. Texts are the weakest evidence you'll ever get. Showing up is the strongest.
  • Tell the whole story to a real person who'll push back. A coach, or the friend who's willing to say "you might be wrong here."
  • Ask what he's actually done wrong. If you can't name it, it may be fear talking, not a flag.
  • Write your own texts. He should be falling for you, not for a chatbot.

The good ones take it slower, love. ChatGPT can read his texts. It can't read the man.
